Morning dog walk oddness

Posted by

There’s an active home construction site a couple of blocks away from us — as always these days — and as I walked Radar on the other side of the road from it this morning, I saw a decent quality can opener sitting on the curb.

That’s perhaps the most unusual thing I’ve seen while walking him. Recycling and garbage and green bin contents, we unfortunately see plenty of*, along with household items people are offering up for free to any takers, etc. But a single can opener in decent shape, on the curb of a park, is a new one to me.

The best I can come up with is that one of the construction workers stepped across the street for a change of scenery for lunch, which was perhaps a can of soup, or the classic offerings of Chef Boyardee. But that leads me to question how a freshly opened can of anything would then be heated up on a construction site.

A plumber’s torch, or something?

And whatever that perhaps makeshift method is, that would be found back across the street at the site anyway, so why cross over to just open the can and then walk back?

A tiny, curious mystery worthy of a morning dog walk in a comfortable neighbourhood.

*which I want to credit to the automatedness of modern household bin collection trucks, with their hydraulic grabby arm that lifts the bins and dumps them into the truck and returns the bins to the street, allowing for plenty of remnants to escape into the street; yet a nearby neighbourhood, seemingly of a similar economic status as ours, and where the same household waste collection would take place, is among the most pristinely kept areas I’ve ever seen. No dog poop around and no garbage or drifting recycle contents anywhere. If it’s not the waste collection methodology, what the difference between their neighbourhood and ours? More pride of ownership causing homeowners to immediately deal with anything on their property? More municipal street cleaning happening? And whatever it is, how do we get more of that here, please?
