What I read this month

A marked improvement over last month, I’m happy to say.

Started and stopped
Horus Rising – Dan Abnett

Reading
The Golem and the Jinni – Helene Wecker
Savage Sword of Conan compendium

Again, nothing I actually finished this month — that’s becoming a more common trend, which I’m not thrilled with — but I picked up and got through and sampled more, which is good.

Horus Rising is something I may pick up again later, but it wasn’t my thing here and now. A friend recommended it. And I think in the right mindset and with enough background knowledge about what’s going on as far as setting and characters go (it’s the first of a series of novels based on a hugely diverse and deep tabletop game universe, and there’s a ton to get up to speed with quickly, and one would for sure be more into it if they knew more of that history and lore, which isn’t usually my bag). So I put it aside for now but may take another crack at it later if/when I get more familiar with the background details about what’s going on.

Meanwhile, I’m enjoying The Golem and the Jinni, which since starting it, I’ve discovered is the first of three or four books. We’ll see how this one plays out before I make any decisions about reading more with the same characters. But so far, so good.

Hopefully with a bit more down time since my wife and daughter are done their respective school years tomorrow, I’ll have more time to read in July. I don’t expect it, of course. I wouldn’t be that foolish. But hope burns eternal.
